How to attach a Vise to a Drill Press

The vise is very useful in this procedure as it secures the material in place leaving both hands free to operate the drill and lubricate the bit that is very important if you are working with metal or plastic. To make precise holes you will have to attach the vise to the table of the drill press to gain the ability to safely hold and drill accurately through the material. Attaching the vise to the table is simple ask and with proper mounting should take just about 30 minutes.
Useful items for the Task o Drill Press Vise o Ratchet 3/8 inch o Drill Press o Permanent marker o Washer 3/8 inch o Drill bit 9/16 inch o Bolts 3/8inch o Drill motor o Nuts 3/8 inch o Safety glasses o Socket 9/16 inch o Cutting and tapping fluid
Instructions — Where possible, consider using a rotary table as this gives you much greater flexibility using the drill press
1. Place the drill vice press atop the table of the drill press.

2. Align the holes on the drill press vise with holes on the drill press table.

3. Slide a 3/8 washer over 3/8 inch bolt and gently inch this through the hole aligned on the drill press table.

4. Rotate the drill press vise to align another hole with the drill press table. Prepare another 3/8 washer and bolt as above and insert through the hole. If no holes align skip to Step 7.

5. Place another 3/8 inch washer through the bolt already in place on the drill press table and vise from the underside of the table.

6. Thread 3/8 inch nut onto the 3/8 inch bolt above and tighten this using the 9/16 inch socket attached to the 3/8 inch ratchet. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for all the holes that align between the drill press vise and drill press table to complete the installation of the drill press vise.

7. If no other holes align, turn the drill press vise to align to the center of the chuck (the adjustable mouth-like part that hold drill bits) of the drill press.

8. Mark each hole of the drill press vise on the table using a permanent marker. Insert the marker into each hole and turn the marker around in each vise hole.

9. Remove the drill press vise from the drill press table and ensure you have on your safety glasses.

10. Fasten a 9/16inch drill bit securely onto the chuck of the drill motor and coat the drill bit with cutting or tapping fluid.

11. Drill a 9/16inch hole into each point you marked earlier with the permanent marker in step 8.

12. Perform steps 3 through 6 to once more attach the drill vise to the table of the drill press.
